John Beck managed Preston North End from 1992 to 1994, becoming one of the most distinctive and controversial figures of the club’s early-1990s era with his intensely direct, set-piece-focused style of football; despite inheriting a struggling side, Beck transformed results and guided North End to the 1993–94 Third Division play-off final at Wembley, where they led through an Ian Bryson goal before losing 4–2 to Wycombe Wanderers; his methods divided opinion, but the promotion challenge restored momentum and optimism at Deepdale during a difficult period before the club’s successful revival later in the decade.
