Paul McKenna became a Preston North End legend after coming through the club’s youth system and making his first-team debut in 1997, developing into a composed and dependable central midfielder; he helped North End win the Second Division title in 1999–2000 under David Moyes and subsequently became a key figure as Preston repeatedly challenged for promotion to the Premier League, featuring in the 2001 and 2005 Championship play-off finals; renowned for his passing, work rate and consistency, McKenna eventually became club captain and made more than 450 appearances during 12 years at Deepdale before joining Nottingham Forest in 2009, establishing himself as one of Preston’s finest modern-era players.
