Alan Kelly Jr became a Preston North End favourite after following his legendary goalkeeper father, Alan Kelly Sr, into the Deepdale goal, making his debut in 1985 and going on to make more than 150 appearances; a talented and reliable goalkeeper, Kelly was part of the Preston side that won promotion from the Fourth Division in 1986–87 under John McGrath, an important moment in the club’s revival after years of struggle; his performances also earned him Republic of Ireland recognition, and he later joined Sheffield United in 1992, eventually playing in the Premier League and representing Ireland at major international tournaments, while maintaining the Kelly family’s strong connection with Preston.
