Sean Gregan became a Preston North End cult hero after joining from Darlington in 1996, developing into the powerful and influential heartbeat of the side during the club’s rise under David Moyes; capable of playing in midfield or defence, Gregan combined physical strength, leadership and composure on the ball, captaining Preston to the Second Division title in 1999–2000 and then helping them reach the First Division play-off final in 2001, narrowly missing successive promotions; affectionately nicknamed “The Beast,” he made more than 250 appearances for North End before joining West Bromwich Albion in 2002, leaving Deepdale as one of the defining players of Preston’s successful turn-of-the-century team.
