Deepdale has been the home of Preston North End since 1878 and is widely recognised as one of the world’s oldest continuously used professional football grounds; it was the stage for Preston’s legendary “Invincibles” of 1888–89, who became the first English league champions and completed the league and FA Cup double unbeaten; the stadium was extensively redeveloped from the 1990s into a modern all-seater ground, with stands named after club icons including Sir Tom Finney, Bill Shankly and Alan Kelly; outside stands the famous “Splash” statue of Finney, inspired by an iconic photograph, while Deepdale also housed the National Football Museum before its move to Manchester.
