Alan Knight is a Portsmouth legend and the club’s record appearance holder, playing 801 first-team matches between 1978 and 2000; nicknamed “The Legend,” the goalkeeper spent his entire senior playing career at Fratton Park and was renowned for his loyalty, consistency and spectacular shot-stopping; Knight helped Pompey win promotion to the First Division in 1986–87, returning the club to the top flight after 28 years, and later played a major role in their memorable 1992 FA Cup run, which ended with a semi-final replay defeat to Liverpool on penalties; his extraordinary 22-year career and service through several different eras established him as one of Portsmouth’s greatest-ever players.
