Nwankwo Kanu became a Portsmouth cult hero after joining on a free transfer from West Bromwich Albion in 2006, bringing flair, experience and important goals to Harry Redknapp’s improving side; the Nigerian striker scored 12 goals in his first Premier League season as Pompey finished ninth, but his defining contribution came during the 2007–08 FA Cup, scoring the semi-final winner against West Brom before netting the only goal against Cardiff City in the final at Wembley; that strike secured Portsmouth’s first FA Cup since 1939, and although his role diminished in later seasons, Kanu remained with Pompey through their subsequent financial difficulties until 2012, becoming a hugely popular figure at Fratton Park.
