Dave Stringer was one of Norwich City’s great one-club figures. As a defender, he made 499 appearances for the Canaries and helped them win promotion to the First Division in 1971/72. Later, as manager from 1987 to 1992, he oversaw one of the club’s strongest top-flight periods. Norwich finished fourth in 1988/89, briefly challenged near the top of the First Division and reached the FA Cup semi-finals that same season. He also led them to another FA Cup semi-final in 1992. Player, coach and manager, Stringer became deeply tied to Norwich’s identity.
