Norwich City won the 1985 League Cup, beating Sunderland 1–0 at Wembley in front of over 100,000 supporters; managed by Ken Brown, the Canaries secured the trophy when Gordon Chisholm’s own goal early in the second half proved decisive, although Sunderland had a golden opportunity to equalise when Clive Walker missed a penalty; Norwich’s side featured key figures including Chris Woods, Steve Bruce, Dave Watson and Mick Channon, and the victory delivered the club’s second League Cup after their 1962 triumph; remarkably, both Norwich and Sunderland were relegated from the First Division that same season, creating a lasting bond between the two sets of supporters known as the Friendship Trophy connection.
