Northern Ireland’s Euro 2016 debut under Michael O’Neill was built on defensive organisation, set-pieces and huge support from the “Green and White Army”. Drawn in Group C (Germany, Poland, Ukraine), they lost 1–0 to Poland, then delivered a landmark 2–0 win over Ukraine (McAuley header, McGinn late) for their first EURO finals victory. A narrow 1–0 defeat to Germany left them third, but good enough to progress as one of the best third-placed teams. Their run ended in the last 16: Wales 1–0 Northern Ireland, decided by a Gareth McAuley own goal from a Bale cross.
