Millwall enjoyed one of the greatest seasons in their history in 1987–88, winning the Second Division title and reaching the top flight of English football for the first time; managed by John Docherty, the Lions combined an exciting attacking style with the prolific strike partnership of Teddy Sheringham and Tony Cascarino, while players such as Terry Hurlock and Les Briley provided midfield steel; Millwall finished with 82 points, securing promotion at Hull City before clinching the championship, and the achievement took the club into the First Division for 1988–89, where their momentum continued with an extraordinary early title challenge and an eventual tenth-place finish.
