Bryan Robson became Middlesbrough player-manager in 1994, leading the club through one of the most ambitious and memorable periods in its history; in his first season he guided Boro to the First Division title and promotion to the Premier League, before attracting major names including Juninho, Fabrizio Ravanelli and Emerson to the newly opened Riverside Stadium; the extraordinary 1996–97 season saw Middlesbrough reach both the FA Cup and League Cup finals, but they lost both and were relegated after a controversial three-point deduction; Robson immediately won promotion back to the Premier League in 1997–98 and later reached another League Cup final before leaving in 2001.
