Jack Charlton managed Middlesbrough from 1973 to 1977, transforming the club with his disciplined, uncompromising approach; in his first season, Boro dominated the Second Division in 1973–74, winning the title by a remarkable 15 points under the two-points-for-a-win system and conceding just 30 league goals; built around players such as Willie Maddren, Stuart Boam, Graeme Souness and John Hickton, Charlton established Middlesbrough as a strong First Division side, finishing seventh in 1974–75 and winning the Anglo-Scottish Cup in 1976; his successful four-year spell at Ayresome Park established his managerial reputation and remains one of Middlesbrough’s most celebrated eras.
