Steve Coppell became a Manchester United favourite after joining from Tranmere Rovers in 1975, developing into an outstanding right winger renowned for his pace, crossing, intelligence and remarkable consistency; he helped Tommy Docherty’s exciting side win promotion back to the First Division and then lifted the 1977 FA Cup, when United defeated Liverpool 2–1 at Wembley to deny them the Treble, while Coppell later played in the 1979 FA Cup final and earned 42 England caps; a serious knee injury suffered while playing for England ultimately forced his retirement in 1983 aged just 28, but his 207 consecutive league appearances and exciting wing play established him as one of United’s finest players of that era.
