Dennis Tueart became a Manchester City favourite after joining from Sunderland in 1974, bringing pace, flair and goals to the Maine Road attack; his defining moment came in the 1976 League Cup final against Newcastle United at Wembley, when he scored a spectacular overhead kick to secure a 2–1 victory and one of the most iconic goals in City history; Tueart also helped City finish second in the First Division in 1976–77, just one point behind champions Liverpool, and across two spells his exciting attacking style and Wembley heroics ensured his lasting status as a City cult hero.
