David Batty was a key figure in Leeds United’s successful early-1990s side and one of the club’s most popular midfielders, known for his tough tackling, relentless work rate and simple, effective passing; a product of the Leeds academy, he became an important part of Howard Wilkinson’s team and helped the club win the 1991/92 First Division title, forming a strong midfield alongside players such as Gordon Strachan and Gary Speed, while his combative style and commitment made him a fan favourite, and after spells with Blackburn Rovers and Newcastle United, Batty returned to Leeds in 1998 and later featured during the club’s strong European campaigns.
