Tommy Burns’ Kilmarnock spell came in two roles: inspirational player, then player-manager. He joined from Celtic in late 1989 (a £50,000 move) and became a key figure in the club’s revival, making 174 appearances and scoring 21 goals. In April 1992 he became player-manager, and in his first full season (1992–93) he led Killie to promotion to the Premier Division after a decade away. In 1993–94, his side reached the Scottish Cup semi-finals before he left for Celtic.
