Ronnie Whelan represented the Republic of Ireland from 1981–1995, winning 53 caps and scoring 3 goals. An intelligent, left-footed midfielder who could play on the left or centrally, he was part of Ireland’s breakthrough generation: he featured in every match at Euro ’88, memorably scoring an acrobatic volley against the Soviet Union in the group stage. Whelan was also selected for Ireland’s squads at the 1990 and 1994 World Cups, adding experience and control to Jack Charlton’s tournament teams.
