Denis Irwin was one of the Republic of Ireland’s most reliable defenders of the Jack Charlton era, winning 56 caps and scoring 4 goals between 1990 and 1999. A composed left-back (also comfortable on the right), he was known for clean tackling, smart positioning, and top-class dead-ball delivery. He debuted in September 1990 and remained a regular through the 1990s, including involvement in Ireland’s 1994 World Cup campaign. His last cap came in November 1999 in a Euro 2000 play-off vs Turkey.
