Justin Whittle became a hugely popular Hull City captain and defensive leader after joining from Stoke City in 1998, remaining with the Tigers through one of the most difficult periods in their history and then helping lead their revival; a committed, uncompromising centre-back, Whittle stayed as financial problems threatened the club’s future and became closely associated with the move from Boothferry Park to the KC Stadium in 2002; under Peter Taylor he captained Hull to promotion from the Third Division in 2003–04 and then played his part as City secured a second successive promotion in 2004–05, reaching the Championship; making more than 200 appearances before leaving in 2006, Whittle is remembered for his loyalty, leadership and role in taking Hull from crisis to the brink of the Premier League era.
