Michael Turner became one of Hull City’s outstanding defenders of the modern era after joining from Brentford in 2006, developing into a commanding centre-back and a crucial figure in the Tigers’ historic rise to the Premier League; ever-present during the 2007–08 Championship campaign, Turner helped Phil Brown’s side reach Wembley and defeat Bristol City 1–0 in the play-off final, securing top-flight football for the first time in Hull’s history; he then impressed throughout the club’s inaugural 2008–09 Premier League season, contributing important goals as well as powerful defensive performances as City successfully avoided relegation; voted Hull City Player of the Year in consecutive seasons, Turner made more than 100 appearances before moving to Sunderland in 2009, leaving with his reputation transformed from a lower-league prospect into an established Premier League defender.
