Abel Hernández became one of Hull City’s most important strikers of the mid-2010s after arriving from Palermo for a then club-record fee in 2014, scoring on his debut against West Ham United and bringing pace and sharp finishing to the Tigers’ attack; although Hull were relegated from the Premier League in his first season, the Uruguayan was outstanding in the 2015–16 Championship campaign, scoring 20 league goals as Steve Bruce’s side reached the play-offs and then defeated Sheffield Wednesday 1–0 at Wembley to return immediately to the top flight; Hernández continued to provide important goals despite injuries disrupting his later seasons and finished his four-year spell with 39 goals in 110 appearances before leaving in 2018, with his prolific promotion campaign ensuring his place among the notable Hull City strikers of the modern era.
