Hibernian won the 1972 Scottish League Cup under Eddie Turnbull, defeating Celtic 2–1 at Hampden Park in front of more than 71,000 supporters; Pat Stanton captained the famous “Turnbull’s Tornadoes,” with goals from Jimmy O’Rourke and Pat Quinn securing Hibs’ first major trophy in 20 years and providing one of the defining achievements of an outstanding side featuring players such as Alan Gordon, Alex Cropley, John Brownlie and Arthur Duncan.
