Alex MacDonald was a hugely influential figure in Hearts history as both player and manager, making over 300 appearances after joining from St Johnstone in 1976 before becoming player-manager in 1981; alongside Sandy Jardine, he rebuilt Hearts and led them back to the top flight, then came agonisingly close to winning the 1985/86 league title, losing out to Celtic on the final day, while also reaching the Scottish Cup Final that season, with his leadership and role in restoring Hearts as a major force making “Doddie” one of Tynecastle’s most respected figures.
