Jim Cleary was one of Glentoran’s standout players of the 1980s. An elegant, goalscoring midfielder, he joined the club in 1980 and went on to make 413 appearances and score 144 goals, figures Glentoran still place among their notable all-time records. During his time at the Oval, he helped the Glens win two Irish League titles and six Irish Cups, which shows how central he was to a hugely successful era. Individually, he was Glentoran’s Player of the Year in 1983, won the Ulster Footballer of the Year award in 1982–83, and earned five Northern Ireland caps. In simple terms, Cleary was a classy, trophy-laden Glentoran great.
