Trevor Steven became one of the key attacking players in Everton’s dominant 1980s side after joining from Burnley in 1983, establishing himself on the right of midfield with his intelligent movement, precise crossing and eye for goal; Steven helped Howard Kendall’s team win the 1984 FA Cup before playing a major role in the extraordinary 1984–85 season, when Everton captured the First Division title and European Cup Winners’ Cup, scoring the final goal in the 3–1 victory over Rapid Vienna in Rotterdam; combining effectively with right-back Gary Stevens, he also helped Everton claim another league championship in 1986–87 and later returned for a second spell after playing for Rangers and Marseille; with more than 400 appearances across his two Everton spells, Steven became one of the defining players of the club’s golden 1980s generation.
