Kevin Sheedy became one of the most gifted and influential midfielders of Everton’s golden 1980s era after crossing Stanley Park from Liverpool in 1982, with his cultured left foot, passing, long-range shooting and outstanding free-kicks making him a major attacking weapon for Howard Kendall’s side; Sheedy helped Everton win the 1984 FA Cup, the First Division titles in 1984–85 and 1986–87, and the 1985 European Cup Winners’ Cup, scoring in the memorable 3–1 semi-final second-leg victory over Bayern Munich at Goodison Park; a Republic of Ireland international who later appeared at the 1990 World Cup, he contributed goals consistently from midfield and became particularly renowned for his set-piece ability; Sheedy made more than 350 appearances and scored nearly 100 goals for Everton before leaving in 1992, securing his place among the defining players of the club’s most successful modern era.
