Paul Rideout secured his place in Everton history with the winning goal in the 1995 FA Cup final, having joined the club from Rangers in 1992 and become an important attacking figure during a difficult period at Goodison Park; his defining moment came against Manchester United at Wembley, when Duncan Ferguson’s header struck the crossbar and Rideout reacted quickest to head the rebound past Peter Schmeichel, giving Everton a 1–0 victory and their fifth FA Cup; the striker had also scored important goals during Joe Royle’s revival of the team that season and finished the campaign as Everton’s leading scorer; although his Goodison career lacked the sustained trophy success enjoyed by earlier generations, Rideout’s Wembley winner delivered the club’s first major honour since 1987 and ensured his lasting status as an Everton cult hero.
