England hosted and won the 1966 FIFA World Cup, their first (and so far only) men’s World Cup title. Alf Ramsey’s side topped a group with Uruguay, Mexico and France, conceding just once. They beat Argentina 1–0 in a tense quarter-final, then came from behind to defeat Portugal 2–1 in the semi-final, with Bobby Charlton scoring both. The final at Wembley against West Germany ended 2–2 after extra time; Geoff Hurst scored twice in extra time to complete a hat-trick, sealing a 4–2 victory.
