Sir Alex Ferguson’s big breakthrough came at Dunfermline Athletic (1964–1967). Signed from St Johnstone in 1964 (in an exchange deal involving Dan McLindon), he quickly became a prolific, all-action centre-forward, scoring in his opening games and racking up seven hat-tricks for the Pars. He was Dunfermline’s top scorer in all three seasons, with the club heritage records listing 90 goals in 136 appearances. His peak was 1965–66, when he hit 45 goals in 51 games and finished joint top league scorer with 31 league goals. In 1967, Rangers paid a Scottish record inter-club fee of £65,000 to sign him.
