Stephen Pearson secured his place in Derby County history by scoring the winning goal in the 2007 Championship play-off final against West Bromwich Albion at Wembley; having joined from Celtic earlier that year, the Scottish midfielder arrived late into the penalty area to meet Giles Barnes’ cross and score the only goal of a 1–0 victory, sending Billy Davies’ Rams into the Premier League; although Pearson’s Derby career was later disrupted by injuries and the club endured a disastrous top-flight campaign, his Wembley goal remains one of the most important in their modern history, delivering promotion in the first play-off final staged at the rebuilt Wembley Stadium.
