Archie Gemmill became a Derby County legend after joining from Preston North End in 1970, with the energetic Scottish midfielder playing a crucial role in the club’s golden era; signed by Brian Clough and Peter Taylor, Gemmill combined relentless running, creativity and aggression and helped Derby win their historic First Division title in 1971–72 and reach the European Cup semi-finals in 1972–73; after Clough’s departure, he remained influential under Dave Mackay as Derby captured a second league championship in 1974–75, and his performances made him a favourite at the Baseball Ground before he left for Nottingham Forest in 1977, later famously starring for Scotland at the 1978 World Cup.
