Ray Wilkins became one of Chelsea’s most important young players of the 1970s, emerging from the club’s youth system to make his first-team debut in 1973 at just 17; an elegant, intelligent midfielder renowned for his passing and composure, Wilkins was appointed club captain at only 18 and became a central figure as Chelsea attempted to recover from financial problems and relegation; alongside players such as Ray Lewington, Steve Finnieston and Garry Stanley, he helped Eddie McCreadie’s youthful side win promotion back to the First Division in 1976–77, earning the affectionate nickname “Butch” and becoming a Stamford Bridge favourite; after more than 200 appearances, Wilkins joined Manchester United in 1979, but his Chelsea connection remained strong, and he later returned in coaching roles, including as assistant manager, making him an admired figure across several generations of the club’s history.
