Ruud Gullit became a transformative figure in Chelsea history after joining from Sampdoria in 1995, bringing world-class pedigree, charisma and technical quality to a club beginning its rise toward the modern era; initially used in defence before flourishing in midfield, the former Ballon d’Or winner was named Chelsea’s Player of the Year for 1995–96, and in 1996 he succeeded Glenn Hoddle as player-manager; Gullit attracted major international names including Gianfranco Zola, Roberto Di Matteo and Gianluca Vialli, helping reshape Chelsea into an increasingly cosmopolitan and ambitious side; his greatest achievement came in 1997, when Chelsea defeated Middlesbrough 2–0 at Wembley to win the FA Cup, ending the club’s 26-year wait for a major trophy and making Gullit the first Black manager to win a major English football trophy; although he left in 1998, his influence helped establish the foundations for Chelsea’s subsequent success.
