Derek Hales is one of Charlton Athletic’s greatest goalscorers, scoring a club-record 168 league goals across three spells with the Addicks between 1973 and 1985; nicknamed “Killer,” the powerful centre-forward was renowned for his aggressive style, strength and ruthless finishing, most notably scoring 28 league goals as Charlton won promotion from the Third Division in 1974–75; Hales formed a memorable partnership with Mike Flanagan, although the pair famously came to blows during an FA Cup match in 1979, and despite spells away with Derby County and West Ham United, Hales repeatedly returned to The Valley, finishing with over 350 appearances and enduring status as a Charlton legend.
