Derek Hales is one of the most iconic strikers in the history of Charlton Athletic. Nicknamed “Killer,” Hales became a cult hero during the 1970s and early 1980s because of his aggressive style, fierce shooting and prolific goalscoring record. Across two spells with Charlton, he scored more than 160 goals in all competitions, making him one of the club’s all-time leading scorers. Hales was known for his fiery personality as much as his finishing ability. One infamous moment came in 1979 when he was involved in an on-pitch altercation with teammate Mike Flanagan during a match. Despite that volatility, supporters adored him for his passion and commitment. He remains a legendary figure at The Valley and a symbol of Charlton’s hard-edged football culture of that era.
