Alan Curbishley managed Charlton Athletic from 1991 to 2006, becoming one of the most important figures in the club’s modern history; initially joint-manager with Steve Gritt before taking sole charge, he guided Charlton to the Premier League through the dramatic 1998 play-off final, beating Sunderland on penalties after a thrilling 4–4 draw at Wembley; although relegated the following season, Curbishley immediately brought them back as First Division champions in 1999–2000 and then established the Addicks as a respected top-flight side, including a superb seventh-place finish in 2003–04; working with limited resources, his consistency and longevity transformed Charlton before he departed in 2006 after 15 years in charge.
