Leighton James was one of Burnley’s finest players of the 1970s, with the skilful Welsh winger making his breakthrough at Turf Moor after joining the club as a youngster; renowned for his pace, dribbling and creativity, James was a key figure as Burnley won the Second Division title in 1972–73 and then impressed back in the First Division, finishing sixth in 1973–74; his performances earned him regular Wales international recognition and eventually a move to Derby County in 1975, but James later returned for two further spells with Burnley, helping them win the Third Division title in 1981–82, cementing his status as a Clarets favourite.
