Tom Heaton joined Burnley from Bristol City in 2013 and became one of the outstanding goalkeepers of the Sean Dyche era, immediately helping the Clarets win Premier League promotion in 2013–14; appointed club captain, Heaton was renowned for his shot-stopping, leadership and consistency, playing a major role as Burnley won the Championship title in 2015–16 and then established themselves in the top flight; his performances earned him England recognition, including three senior caps, while a remarkable display against Manchester United at Old Trafford in 2016 underlined his quality; injuries later allowed Nick Pope to emerge, and Heaton eventually left Turf Moor for Aston Villa in 2019.
