Burnley’s 2–1 victory over Leyton Orient on 9 May 1987 is remembered as the game that effectively saved the club from possible extinction; needing to win on the final day to avoid relegation from the Football League, a crowd of over 15,000 packed Turf Moor as Neil Grewcock gave Burnley the lead before Ian Britton headed what became the decisive second goal; Orient pulled one back, creating a nerve-racking finish, but Burnley held on to preserve their Football League status, and with relegation potentially threatening the club’s very future, the match became known simply as “The Orient Game,” with Britton forever remembered as a Clarets hero.
