John Atyeo is widely regarded as Bristol City’s greatest-ever player, spending his entire Football League career at Ashton Gate from 1951 to 1966; a powerful and prolific centre-forward, he scored a club-record 351 goals in 645 appearances in all competitions, helping City win the Third Division South title in 1954–55 and later return to the Second Division in 1965; remarkably, Atyeo combined professional football with training to become a teacher and also represented England six times, scoring five goals; his loyalty, goalscoring record and character made him a Bristol City legend, with the Atyeo Stand at Ashton Gate later named in his honour.
