Ronaldo Nazário ("R9") had one of the greatest World Cup careers ever. Across four tournaments (1994, 1998, 2002 and 2006), he scored 15 World Cup goals in 19 matches, a record at the time. His breakthrough came in 1998, when he scored four goals and won the Golden Ball as the tournament's best player, although Brazil lost the final to France. The defining moment of his career came in 2002. After recovering from devastating knee injuries, Ronaldo scored eight goals, won the Golden Boot, and netted both goals in Brazil's 2–0 victory over Germany in the final. In 2006 he added three more goals, taking his World Cup total to 15 and cementing his status as one of the tournament's all-time legends.
