Borussia Dortmund’s 2001–02 Bundesliga title was dramatic because they came through late and held their nerve when the race tightened. BVB finished first on 70 points, one ahead of Bayer Leverkusen and two ahead of Bayern Munich, sealing the championship on the final day. The team was coached by Matthias Sammer and built around players like Jens Lehmann, Christian Wörns, Dedê, Tomáš Rosický, Jan Koller, and Márcio Amoroso. Amoroso finished as Dortmund’s top league scorer with 18 goals. Dortmund also reached the 2002 UEFA Cup final that season, so it was a genuine high point for the club. Historically, it was Dortmund’s sixth German championship and their third Bundesliga-era title.
