Fernando Hierro joined Bolton Wanderers from Al-Rayyan in 2004, bringing extraordinary pedigree after a legendary career with Real Madrid and Spain; initially expected to play in defence, Sam Allardyce often used him in midfield, where his composure, passing and experience helped Bolton enjoy one of their finest Premier League campaigns, finishing sixth in 2004–05 and qualifying for the UEFA Cup; despite being 36 when he arrived, Hierro’s class was still evident alongside players such as Jay-Jay Okocha, Kevin Davies and Gary Speed, and although he spent only one season at the Reebok Stadium before retiring in 2005, his signing perfectly represented Allardyce’s ability to attract celebrated international players to Bolton.
