Barcelona’s 2009 treble (the club’s first, and Spain’s first) came under Pep Guardiola in 2008–09: La Liga, Copa del Rey, and the UEFA Champions League. They sealed the cup first, beating Athletic Bilbao 4–1 in the Copa del Rey final on 13 May 2009. They then won La Liga with 87 points. The treble was completed in Rome on 27 May 2009, defeating Manchester United 2–0 in the Champions League final—Eto’o early, Messi late—powered by the Xavier-Hernández/Iniesta midfield control.
