Paolo Maldini and the Champions League are almost inseparable. With AC Milan, he won five European Cups/Champions Leagues: 1989, 1990, 1994, 2003, and 2007. UEFA credits him with 109 Champions League appearances, plus 19 more in the old European Cup format, which shows how long he stayed elite. He was the symbol of Milan’s defensive class: first as an elegant left-back, later as a commanding centre-back. His most famous final moment was scoring after just 50 seconds against Liverpool in the 2005 final, still one of the fastest goals in a European Cup final, even though Milan eventually lost that match. He later got redemption by captaining Milan to victory in 2007.
