blessed with sharp movement, exceptional finishing and a natural goalscoring instinct, Allen made an extraordinary breakthrough in 1979–80, scoring 28 league goals as Rangers challenged for promotion from the Second Division; his performances earned him a remarkable £1.25 million transfer to Arsenal in 1980, although he moved to Crystal Palace shortly afterwards without playing a competitive match for Arsenal; Allen returned to QPR in 1981 and became an important figure under Terry Venables, helping Rangers reach the 1982 FA Cup final against Tottenham Hotspur, which they lost 1–0 in a replay after drawing the original match 1–1;
