in his first season Horne helped Millwall win the 1987–88 Second Division championship, securing promotion to the top flight for the first time in the club’s history; he then played throughout the extraordinary 1988–89 First Division campaign, when the newly promoted Lions briefly led English football’s top division during the autumn and eventually finished 10th, still the highest league position Millwall have achieved; Horne remained a regular through the difficult 1989–90 relegation season and the club’s subsequent attempts to return to the top flight, eventually leaving in 1993, the year Millwall moved from the Old Den;
